Heritage and environment

Take some time to consider the following points:

• Negative impact on the visual appearance of Headingley Lane and Otley Rd:
• road will be widened, some pavements and green verges will be narrowed (see plans)
• 400 mature trees to be felled (see photos)
• Many remaining trees to be cut back to allow room for the overhead trolleybus power cables
• Additional street clutter (traffic lights, signs, overhead cabling, extra shelters, etc).
• Much of the route is in designated Conservation Areas (historic walls & buildings will be affected)

• Metro's own forecasts show that fuel consumption and emissions will increase (despite reduction in the number of diesel-powered buses). This is because of the expected increase in congestion and rat-running traffic. (Although vehicle emissions in Headingley are already recognised as a serious problem, the City is backing a proposal which will make them even worse)

• Implications for the quality of life in Headingley and the other communities on the route, both whilst the developments are taking place and ongoing.
